Re: Astro sketching

Huge prominence on the Sun today. Made a sketch while observing with my Lunt 50 H-alpha telescope + 14mm Celestron Omni eyepiece. 2B 0.5mm mechanical pencil + blending stumps + erasers After processing: https://i.imgur.com/idq9CzI.jpeg Original sketch https://i.imgur.com/7OaOXw3.jpeg Handphone image...

Re: Planning to go Mersing / Desaru for more objects to gaze

Yes it's worth it, if the sky is not cloudy. Mersing is darker since it's further from sg, Desaru is nearer and has more hotels so it might be a more comfortable especially if intending to bring family, kids etc. However most resorts are well lit so it's a tradeoff.

Re: My first planet imaged in Singapore: Jupiter at opposition on 08 Dec 2024

As for the weather predictions: since you brought up looking at satellite images and using experience to judge whether it'll be overcast or not, I've already done what you've suggested. However, my point is that since we can use our own brains for doing this, a weather AI can do it too. It'll proba...

Re: My first planet imaged in Singapore: Jupiter at opposition on 08 Dec 2024

Nice image with a very modestly size scope! Weather in the tropics is always very volatile and unpredictable. so forecast will have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Unfortunately it is not like in drier climates where they can plan observations hours or days in advance. I think experience from watc...

Re: String-strut DOB250

I gave a talk during a recent local astro event showcasing my dobsonian and discussing other dobsonian designs.

For anyone interested, I uploaded it to YouTube here:

Re: Astro sketching (Comet C/2023 A3)

I guess I shall post about my journey into astro sketching here... As a beginner, the comet was a good practice target, especially given how demure it looks in our Singapore sky. First sketch was done after seeing it through binoculars between the clouds for 5 seconds, while the second sketch was do...

Astro sketching

Is anyone in our community into astro sketching? I've always had thoughts to try.

Re: 3D printing mounting rings

Depends on whether you actually want to do 3d printing as a hobby I guess... thought of buying too, but realised I just want to print occasional parts for astro, don't really want to spend time maintaining. I have been using 3dprintsingapore.com at toa payoh, user friendly website and good print qua...

Re: What power supply do you use to power your rig?

Looking around for LiFePO4 batteries preferably from local vendor for safety... probably don't need such a large capacity either. Any suggestions?

Re: How do Dobs/Newtonians fare in singapore light polluted skies

Making sure stray lights don't enter the scope should be the top priority. If that means you need to walk a little, a lighter scope might be better. Get a trolley too, if you have space at home you can leave the dob on it all ready to go.
