Re: Planetary Obession (latest: 2022 update)

Again, time to update this post. Only managed two images in 2022 due to multiple factors including my schedule and clear skies simply not aligning, a shift toward visual, and building of my dob. Venus - my first time imaging in invisible light. The colour palette brings out subtle cloud features. I ...

Re: Planetary Beginnings

Oh for deep sky astrophotography light pollution is a problem, but not as bad as for visual because it can be mitigated if you have long integration times or large aperture. And then of course there are filters which is a rabbit hole of itself. I think it really depends on your expectations. If you ...

Re: Planetary Beginnings

I feel it's not much use to find "dark" sites in sg because you can't really escape the light pollution. Anyway for planets, light makes absolutely no difference to the view because they are so bright. A good location for planetary will be somewhere open, away from tall buildings and other...

Re: Planetary Beginnings

Great job, it's really quite fantastic for a 6 inch scope. I think you've nailed most of the process, so it'll mainly be down to seeing. Observing location has a huge impact on seeing too.

Re: Strut-String DOB250

The whole thing weighs about 10kg! My plan is to pack it into a medium size suitcase (~26in) and if flying hand carry the mirror. I'm making a shroud from photo backdrop cloth because it is basically useless for deep sky with the mirrror so exposed, so maybe that might be enough for dew. Things are ...

Re: Beginner/Amateur Setup 2022

Nice to hear back and good to know you've gotten some decent views! I suggest giving a few months to really tease out all the scope can give and understand where it stands before thinking about an upgrade. Also for planets at high magnification, apart from perfect collimation, good seeing (atmospher...

Re: Beginner/Amateur Setup 2022

Since you seem to know what you're getting into i strongly reccomend to just bite the bullet and go with the 6SE or any other big scope with goto. Take the effort to collimate the scope carefully and saturn and jupiter would be really really amazing. Goto is really nice when observing planets at hig...

Re: Beginner/Amateur Setup 2022

Hi and welcome. I think it's a fairly appropriate post since questions this specific don't get asked a lot on our local forum here. For me my advice for beginners is to either get a scope that does not require collimation (maksutovs or refractors), or get the largest scope you can afford and then ta...
