Re: Has anyone used a Polemaster at these latitudes?

Polaris and some of the surrounding stars must be visible in order to use the Polemaster - a bit challenging perhaps if you are in Singapore or Malaysia! The current version of SharpCap, 3.1, includes a PA routine that can work on stars up to 7 degrees from the NCP. I live in Thailand now, 14 degree...

Re: Iceland

I've never lived in Iceland but I have lived in Scotland and both countries' climates are dominated by weather systems coming in off the Atlantic which means unpredictable but usually wet and windy. The winds may blow the clouds away but the skies will not be dark. In Scotland in June twilight lasts...

Re: Couch potato Astrophotography

I had replaced the original image on Flickr with a later attempt at post-processing to draw out more detail in the neb, however I did check that the image link in the original post was still working and showing the updated image. I've just edited the post and relinked to the Flickr image again - I h...

Couch potato Astrophotography

From my apartment on East coast my only view of the sky is a few degrees width of the eastern horizon up to about 30 degrees altitude, so astrophoto opportunities are usually pretty limited. But by some lucky coincidence the skies on Friday evening were clear to near the horizon and Orion was rising...

Moon and Mercury

A snap of this morning's conjunction of the Moon and Mercury. You may struggle to pick out Mercury from the dust on your monitor but its to the upper right of the moon and makes an almost isosceles triangle with the aircraft at lower right. It is a bit more obvious on the original on Flickr. http://...

Re: Orion widefield

Thailand does seem to be mostly cloud free during the dry season (from around December to March/April), if you can get far enough away from the major urban areas the skies can be really good. We were lucky to be at a home-stay in the hills east of Chiang Mai. No mobile phone signal, no internet and,...

Orion widefield

This is my first serious attempt at astrophotography - Orion's belt showing the Flame and Horsehead nebulae, with M78 at top left; secondly the M42 region - this being cropped from the widefield original. Both were taken using an unmodified Canon 650D with EF200mm lens and an Astrotrac mount for tra...

Moon shot

Hi everyone, A newbie on this forum, just wanted to mark the return of clearer skies to Singapore and the end of the Year of the Snake with a snap from this morning of the waning crescent moon next to Venus. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2865/12200839946_14cb4580fe.jpg Moon and Venus by js19pv , on ...
