Re: M42 on 13 March 2025 - Processing is a pain

Hi Vincent, I’m glad you’re getting a small refractor. It’ll be a lot easier than an SCT. As for image processing, try Siril which is free. There’s a lot of tutorials on YouTube that you can follow along. Siril is an all in one solution for image processing from stacking to stretching. IMO, Siril wi...

Re: M42 on 13 March 2025 - Processing is a pain

Hi Vince, If you're serious about getting into DSO astrophotography, I'd recommend that you ditch the SCT (use it for planetary) and buy a small (60 mm to 80 mm) refractor that is between F/5 to F/6. SCT imaging has higher demands on guiding, collimation, mount quality, etc. that gets in the way for...

Re: M42 on 13 March 2025 - Processing is a pain

Hi Vince, Since you asked, here's what I see: you have a lot of coma which may be a stacking artifact. But because of poor focusing, I can't tell. you have star trails on the two bright stars in the top half of the image. I think you have some problem subframes that have been added to the stack whic...

Re: Random astrophotography pictures - feel free to leave advices

Hi Winston, You'll need to stretch the image because there's data hidden in it that are revealed when it is stretched. You might consider using Siril for both stacking, stretching etc. which is free (note: Siril is well regarded by many astro hobbyists, but I've only used Siril for processing comet ...

Hi Winston,

Did you stretch the image? And focus looks off to me ...

Re: First light with SHG-700

Hi everyone, Here's 3rd light. My second light wasn't that great. So after fighting clouds, I got two images, which I think are acceptable for a newbie. These were taken on 24 Feb 2025. The first image was taken at 02:32 UTC: 10_32_53_20250224_disk_0_00_enhanced1_good_bg.jpg and the second at 03:08 ...

Re: First light with SHG-700

Hi Alfred, I think the major problem I have right now are clouds, dang clouds and rain. It makes it setting up and taking SER files with the SHG challenging to say the least. Since you asked about time and because you're more experienced with Solar imaging than I am, please take what I say below abo...

First light with SHG-700

Hi everyone, I recently acquired an SHG-700 (https://mlastro.com/mlastro-shg) for solar imaging which I think I may be the first person in Singapore to get this. FYI, it is made in Vietnam which I think it's great to have an astro instrument made in an Asean country. For people unfamiliar with the S...

Re: AR3990 in CAK - RSAF F16 Transit

I guess since the F16 is a fighter/bomber it's allowed to photobomb :)

Great shot!
