Re: Towards Quick and Easy Polar Alignment for Equatorial-Mount Users in Equatorial-Regions
Hi Kenliew, I am also a beginner. I was fighting the same problem as you are. These compasses are never to trust but for rough alignment. Obviously the method described above does not apply to your situation, unfortunately. If I were you, I would first use Google maps to find any reference object in...

Re: COMET NEOWISE
Wow! This really encourages me. Wish for clear skies over north west horizon the next few days.

2020-07-20 clear sky night
It's nice night again with passing clouds. First half was devoted to globular clusters. But I had some problem with APT failing to recognise the camera. After much frustraction and precious times wasted, I found out that it was nothing but only one of the two USB3 ports on my laptop could be used by...

Naked-eye Galaxy Nova (AAVSO Alert Notice 711)
Apparently bright milky way nova visible to naked eye is relatively rare. If you have access to pitch dark skies, you may still be able to capture the fading nova with your own eyes. -------------Copied from AAVSO Alert------------------------------- AAVSO Alert Notice 711 Nova in Reticulum: MGAB-V2...

2020-7-17 Clear Sky Night Observation&Photography (Image embedding problem fixed)
Despite persistent cloudy or rainy nights, there have been moments of clear sky windows on some lucky days. July-17 was such a day. The aim was not beautiful deep sky images but as many as interesting objects as possible, for I was simply worried that if the wet condition was ever to continue for an...

Re: Dark sites on the island
Some Punggol HDB rooftop provides virtually unblocked views of the night sky. Not as dark as desired, but definitely better than the city and many towns. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3cvao86ZinT3Cl-eQVQztROySJROMnWpY30M7qCWSzlsAPz-M-HPFYJYhl4qnSMBNiCCiwwtW60N3pRzTbxsMeMmINvknBVoXFGo1FAu...

Re: Towards Quick and Easy Polar Alignment for Equatorial-Mount Users in Equatorial-Regions
The wet season persists. At the same time, my telescope is sent back for servicing. But you know what? I rediscovered the value and fun of my much portable setup including a star tracker and a prime lens+CMOS combo. Thanks to the works earlier, now I can just simply aim my polar scope on the star tr...

Any variable star observers group in Singapore?
Recently discovered the fun of observing variable stars. Came to know so many types of variable stars and every category have easily accessible targets even if you don't have a telescope but a camera -- and even if you cannot avoid the ubiquitous high level of light pollution on the island. The whol...

Re: Towards Quick and Easy Polar Alignment for Equatorial-Mount Users in Equatorial-Regions
Last night made use of transient not so clear skies to learn and practice astrophotography. This time round that rig was set up smoothly. And turning the alz and az knobs to align the image took less than 1 minute (or two?) Later the PhD guiding assistance reported a PA error of 4.1arcmin. There mus...
