Re: Advice on Solar Observation in Singapore

A couple of things. Firstly, I had the exact same thought, but do bear in mind that just because we see the sun, it doesn't mean that there are no clouds in front of the sun. Anything short of clear blue skies around the sun and you're in for a frustrating session. Secondly, it is super hot to work ...

Re: Building an 8" Portaball wannabe with Ikea Blanda Bowls

After making the necessary cuts on the top bowl, I started work on the bottom bit. The unique part of the scope is that it is quite well-balanced and bottom heavy, such that the entire assemble past mid point of the ball (i.e. the top bowl, trusses, secondary, focuser, etc) will be balanced by the b...

I don't have one for sale, though I did just buy one off eBay. That might be your best bet.

Re: Building an 8" Portaball wannabe with Ikea Blanda Bowls

Guess it's time to describe the design. Firstly, I'm using two Blanda Matt bowls, with part of it cut off from the top bowl. The two parts are epoxied together, and perhaps reinforced with some metal plates (undecided). The top bowl is interfaced to a stainless cake ring (9") by a combination o...

Re: Building an 8" Portaball wannabe with Ikea Blanda Bowls

You're not far off the mark! Before I bought this parabolic mirror, I bought an 8" spherical one by mistake. I am in the process of ordering some stuff to re-figure the mirror :D But that's a project for another time. My current project is to overhaul a broken CGEM, changing its servos into ste...

Building an 8" Portaball wannabe with Ikea Blanda Bowls

I built a Portaball-like scope over six weeks, starting from mid September this year. I detailed the build on cloudy nights, including many missteps along the way. I am going to repost some of the posts here for brevity. Hope this will be of interest to some of you. I'll start near the end. This is ...

Re: eVscope | 100 times more powerful than a classical teles

There is some similarity between the eVScope and video astronomy, such as that practiced by fellow forumer sherring. I used to do some video astronomy myself, but transitioned to CMOS-based cameras for the ease of stacking, simpler interface, and better performance. When I read about the eVscope a f...

WTB : Reflector focuser (BOUGHT!)

Hi guys,

I'm doing a small DIY reflector and am in need of a decent focuser, preferably 2 inch with 1.25 inch adapter. Please PM me if you have one. In this case, cheap is good!

Re: Andromeda Galaxy with Binoculars

When I saw it with my binos, it was a little cloud that was stationary. To make sure you are really seeing it, and not just your eyes playing tricks on you, move your binos around a bit. :D
