Re: Asteroid2004BL86

I've to make a correction to my earlier post. I've just checked with the JPL Horizons website: http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons.cgi Asteroid 2004 BL86 would be visible from Singapore on Monday 26 Jan 2015 from about **8.30pm** onwards (above 25 deg) in the SSE in Puppis, and rising. It would then be...

Re: Comet Lovejoy C/2014 RA & Dec data

Hi ben,

You can obtain the RA and Dec coordinates (ephemeris) for any known solar system object from the JPL Horizons website:
http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons.cgi#top

For this comet, the target body would be keyed-in as 'C/2014 Q2'.

Re: Pluto probe launch Tuesday night

Finally! The New Horizons probe to Pluto has been launched. I've just watched its lift-off about 10 minutes ago at exactly 3am S'pore time on Fri 20 Jan 2006. There was about a 45 min delay today due to clouds. After 9 years, New Horizons' long-awaited fly-by of Pluto will soon be happening on (fin...

Re: Asteroid2004BL86

Yes, Rich! I hope to view and image this asteroid. I believe it would be visible from Singapore on Monday 26 Jan 2015 from about [correction:] 8.30pm onwards in the South-East in Puppis. It would then be at around mag 10. More info here: http://edition.cnn.com/2015/01/22/us/asteroid-fly-by/ http://w...

Re: Catches from a Crash Trip: Mersing 16/1/15~18/1/15

Rich: I am actually planning to foray into visual, even if my primary engagement is in AP. There is still a sense of wonder seeing a faint galaxy with one's own eyes through a giant dobsonian under dark skies! :) Excellent images, Ivan! Hope they don't get pilfered... Yes, do rem the bright side to...

Re: Two more Planets in our Solar System: says Astronomers

Interesting.

If we could find one of them, we would be famous! But at 200 and 250 AU, they would be extremely faint, perhaps discoverable by detecting eclipses of background stars.

Re: Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy): 4th mag in late Dec / early J

Yesterday (Sat 17 Jan 2015), I drove up to the Sedili region with Thomas to ob for a few hours. I simply had to do this comet justice by viewing and imaging it from a rural/dark area! Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) was an easy naked eye object , seen with the slightest effort with direct vision. At first...

Re: Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy): 4th mag in late Dec / early J

I've made an attempt at calculating the actual size (in km) of the coma of Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy). I was wondering about this but could not find the info on the net. The coma's recent reported apparent size, visually, is about 30 arc mins (i.e. 0.5 deg): http://cobs.si/recent It's recent distance...

Re: Comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy): 4th mag in late Dec / early J

I've made some further observations of Comet Q2 Lovejoy: 1. As reported on the other thread, at the Comet Party on Sat 10 January 2015 at East Coast Park, I viewed the comet through my 12.5" dob. The comet was then at its brightest on the light-curve, in Taurus. It was reported by experienced c...
