Mersing report - July 2018: The Good, The Heng and The Suay
Once again its time to document a pretty successful trip to the nearest dark sky site in Mersing! The trip took place over 13-15 July. The duration of clear sky time at night was a definite improvement compared to my last trip there on 13-15th April. Did this trip break the Friday 13th bad luck tabo...

Re: WTB : Budget Alt Az Mount
Hi , I may be wrong , but the existing tripod for your astromaster EQ mount may not be compatible with any AZ mount as your tripod plate area is recessed inwards. Not only that, the 2 types of mounts use different sized screws to connect the mount to tripod.
Hope this helps,

Re: MARS-LE ... an upcoming public astro event in Singapore!
Maybe to help give a final count/estimate of how many telescopes will be there to the Marina Pier Admininstration, we can start a list, feel free to add on :
MARS-LE telescopes deployed : Staying Overnight? (Y or N)
1. TAL100rs refractor : Junwei (Y)
2.

Re: Darker places in Singapore?
Just FYI, ECP is not dark enough. 2 to 3 rows of ships parked in the sea have their lights on at night. Normal observing of stars and planets and the easier DSOs are ok but the Milky way band is impossible, dont waste time. Easier to just go for a mersing trip =)

Re: New telescope, can't find jupiter
Another alternative is to bring your refractor+setup to a public session and approach the veterans there for help :) There's one group at open space in front of Toa Payoh library, one at Bishan Park macdonald's area, and one at the grass area near to Blk 36 Pine Lane (ehind Old Airport Road Hawker c...

Re: Hi, newbie cant see anything
Hi there Tkhoong, The bare minimum item needed for daytime/indoor Newtonian collimation is a cheshire eyepiece. (a tube with metal wires acting as crosshairs, no optics nor glass in it) For night time and if the sky is not cloudy and if patient enough, one can use a bright star to check the airy dis...

thanks for the kind words all!
It's been so long since zodiacal light was seen/shot at mersing , really quite rare , hence must note down.

Mersing report: 21-23 July 2017 (Mersing: Homecoming)
This marks my third and final chance of the year to go mersing, after a super wet Feb trip and a pretty good April trip. As I had to really make it count (last chance to eyeball DSOs under dark skies), I went to the Bugis/Waterloo street Kwan Ying temple to pray the week before for clear skies and a...
