Night sky over Singapore: 8/9 February 1942
I've been reading some books on the Japanese invasion of Malaya and Singapore during the Second World War. A mention of the sighting of the Southern Cross by the advancing forces into Singapore caught my eye, and I decided to find out what the night sky was like on that historic night. The area of t...

Great shots, Jeremy! I especially like your Omega Centauri: a million points of light! Keep up the good stuff.

Re: Mersing trip report (20-22 March 2015)
A belated thanks all for your comments! Rich: as I had drawn up a list of 100+ priority objects (in both the northern and southern skies), I decided to focus on them instead of attempting a Messier marathon. Anyway, it would not have been possible then to view all of the Messier objects since some o...

Straits Times feature: sidewalk astronomy in Singapore
There is a 2 page full-spread article on sidewalk astronomy in Singapore, in today's Straits Times (Fri 3 Apr 2015), in the Lifestyle section at pgs C4 & C5. It features and quotes from RLow, Remus, Gary Chee, Gerarddyn and Dave Ng. Congrats!! It also features Singastro, plus our Jan 2015 Comet ...

Mersing trip report (20-22 March 2015)
I joined the March 2015 trip to Telok Sari (Mersing, Johor) organised by Remus. This is a brief trip report of my observing experience there. I brought my Obsession 12.5" f/5 Dob (with a superb JMI mirror), direct transport courtesy of Jeremy, and spent two nights observing there (the nights of...

Blazar PKS 0716+71 in bright outburst - imaged fr Singapore
As reported in an AAVSO Special Notice, the blazar PKS 0716+71 is currently in a bright outburst, at about around mag 12+: http://www.aavso.org/aavso-special-notice-396 A blazar is a type of very compact quasar, which is an active galactic nuclei in a giant elliptical galaxy; these are extremely lum...

Iridescent clouds - seen today from Singapore
Thanks to a tip-off from Thomas, I saw and took photos of iridescent clouds (also known as rainbow clouds) in the late afternoon today, at between 5:35pm and 6:00pm (sunset was at 7:19pm). I only had a mobile phone to image the rare phenomenon through a window, in the Robinson Road area. The Sun was...

Re: Asteroid2004BL86
I managed to view the asteroid (2004 BL86) in the eyepiece at 11pm last night, using my Meade LX90 SCT. The asteroid was quite faint; according to the JPL Horizons website, it was then at mag 10.1 and in Lynx. It was in the NE. I saw it as a grey-white star-like dot. It moved very slowly but I could...
