Alfred quoted by MyPaper about Solar Flare impact on SG!

Post by Gary »

Kudos to Mr Daryll Nanayakara from MyPaper for making an effort to get the perspective from local amateur astronomers instead of just only quoting foreign sources like AP or Reuters.

Big solar flare unlikely to affect S'pore

"Unlike other countries, where you have power grids and cables running high above ground, ours are underground and, therefore, wouldn't be exposed to the radiation as much," said Mr Alfred Tan, an astronomy enthusiast specialising in sun analysis."

You can get a copy of this free paper known as MyPaper or 我报 at major distribution points (e.g. MRT stations, Bus Interchange) today. The article is on page A8

Congrats Alfred! I need you to sign on my future solar scope next time! Hahahah :P

Well, not too sure about that--not too sure its effect on the weather and plate tectonics.Yet to determine the impact of those particles--what they are and their impact on the distribution of clouds and of inland rain.Heard of the flash flood and severe downpour in KL and Sydney.

Power for SG not a big issue I guess.

Stuff like GPS affects a lot of us. Air travel etc. Next time we won't be that lucky.

All these issues with raising sea levels, changing weather patterns.... and particularly OVER RELIANCE on technology, i think we are somewhat living on "borrowed time". Don't get me wrong, i like technology and one of my income stream is based on technology (IT), but we are over relying on it.

Nowadays 1 year 7 months kid can do iPhones/iPads liao. What happened to the good stuff like bird watching, cycling/swimming or just lazing around in the pool....... or Astronomy?
