Well, some models for the Edu-science is stated to be grounded glass, so it depends on what you buy but of course, these are toys, so don't expect world class images from them. They are meant to be a first scope for a 10 year old kids and budgeted for a parent not to break into a cold sweat if he breaks it.

For refractors, precision is very important and using glass, it is possible to progressively ground the glass to the correct profile. you can't do this for plastics and no plastic mould is so accurate. For low mag spectacles, plastic is ok but for much higher magnifications, precision is the difference between lousy and good images..

Speaking of ground glass, someone in Sg Astro should learn and hold a course in optics grinding. I heard its really fun grinding and shaping your own mirror!
