Decent place to view?

Post by Sivakis »

Just found this plot of empty land in Bedok North. Not sure how feasible is it.

But it's surrounded by HDB and the famous 85 Market.

The building on the map apparently is no longer there... just a big patch of grass now.

Think it'll be decent enough? Or still too much light around? Or, more importantly, think it's "safe" to be alone in the middle of that field? Sekali passerby see liao, itchy hand to rob.....

Hi,
Hmm... It's look a bit too close to the road, but can't really tell on map, so it's best that you go there at night to check out yourself.

Anyway, I had went to a site "near by" a few years back which is quite good. The site is an open grass patch behind Bedok South Secondary... actually it's above Bedok South Secondary as it on a hill top behind the school... not sure how is the condition now... you might want to check out if you are interested.

Have a nice day.

Interesting. So you'd be referring to this spot:

Image

Is it A or B? Also wondering if C would be a feasible spot (unless it's so forested that it's a waste of time.

Will probably try the first pic spot and try it out. If hungry can pop next door to makan their "bak chor mee!" :)

Thanks weixing!

Hi Sivakis,
Technically speaking any dark area with wide open space will do.
Drivers will prefer somewhere with parking or best of all, park next to obs spot.

Generally the east part like changi and tampine tend to be clearer presumably due to the winds blowing in from the South China Sea but there are those who were in Tuas end near the RO plant where they claimed to be able to see the milky way! But my experience working in Tuas is avoid the industrial areas due to pollution.
There are alot of fields near compass point as well as in Punggol (where kite flyers do their thing in the day time) which is also ideal.

For a list of obs recommendations, do check out our FAQ section. [smilie=cool.gif]

I would think he refers to 'A'. I have been there twice to observe in the pass. It is quite an accessible location and being on a field is a plus as it is quite far from the street lights if you put your telescope in the centre of the field. However, it is not as dark as the far end of East Coast Park or at Changi.

Well, at East Coast it is also possible to see the Milky Way and saw it a few times.. it just needs best transparency and no high altitude clouds to see. Though it is pretty once in a blue moon.

It is possible to see Mag 5 stars from East Coast.

I see. So from a technical and environmental pov, the coastline is better because you eliminate maximum light pollution from 1 side, so tends to lead to better viewing.

Never thought of that. Cool thanks!

Yes, if you go the far east part of Singapore (along the coast), you will get better viewing for the Southern and Eastern constellations as there is less light pollution. Light pollution is little in the East direction as that portion is Desaru region in Malaysia. For the south light pollution comes from Batam and Bintan which is not much.
