Some guys attached a Pentax K10D DSLR onto a balloon and launched it to the edge of space before it dropped back down when the balloon burst.

K10D is a sealed camera, and if you check the box it is quite heavily insulated. I do know that battery life is greatly reduced at low temp.

the guys using the Pentax had 2 GPS receivers on their balloon, and radios, so they always know where the balloon is.

I googled for a while before managing to find the post i lost long ago.
You managed to get another one.
Wee Ern : Actually most cameras can work for short periods at extreme low temps. otherwise in cold countries in winter no one will be able to take nay photos! If you scan youtube, you will be able to see alot of similar attempts by people using other DSLR and PnS cameras too.
