The kindle should be launched soon locally. The problem though is that the AT&T whispernet which is already active in Singapore will bar you from the USA Kindle store unless the kindle has been activated in the country of purchase already.
This might have changed in the last few months, but I'm thinking not.
I'm still holding out for the local launch to be safe.
