i hope it is clear enough that there is a world of difference between "activities in the sun affects our weather" and "there is a very active band n the sun now, i hope it won't flood again in singapore." it is like the difference between "there are many phenomenon yet to to be explained by science" and "therefore god exists."...

Not that sure about that, and to truly 'understand' we need to know what particles those active regions shot out of the sun and the actual path it took--well, even now new elementary particles are discovered every now and then and discoverer are given nobel prize!--so how to 'understand'?.Its to look for possible pattern of behaviour --just like the early worker after the invention of the microscope. This is our only way perhaps.
So,I will continue to observe the sun;look out for such band formation and match it with severe weather condition/precipitation worldwide.;and remember ,from 2011 june to 2013 june cycle 24 will peak and will be most interesting.Singapore is only a SMALL part of the world and solar activities will affect the world as a whole and sometimes unluckly,Singapore.Have you wonder why both previous Singapore flood occur in june? just by coincidence or perhaps due to,say the orientation of the earth axis/magnetic field w.r.t the sun active region and hence trigger some particles? from the sun to hit at the correct location ..... and trigger such heavy downpour at our location?

Let's all be nice and not bash other's idea. We have to remember that some of the significant scientific breakthrough are from people who believed the world is round and that we are revolving around the sun.

indeed. just as astrology is a popular science with long history for predicting encounters of certain people based on their birth dates and the position of planets and other celestial bodies in the sky. from the birth of gods & kings, to your luck of getting laid next week.

nah, astrology is based on forces too weak.

his observations are from a much nearer object that has been known to cause phenomenas like auroras, etc etc.

h-alpha is a relative new thing, something which has not been used for observation in the past. i would not be so hasty to discredit his observations.

There's no scientific basis to the reasoning behind all these (e.g. "Well, flood in Spore yesterday in Orchard area again and yes,the brighten northern band can be seen on the sun;in both Cak line and Ha line with bandwidth < or = 0.5A....). We should not draw conclusions based on a few specific events) Please do not post similar stuff in places other than Coffee Corner; all such posts elsewhere will be deleted. Thanks.

Well.scientific basis?I have to say that many scientific and for that matter "scientific definition"are just base on long term observational deductions--example,secondary physics;defn of moments of a force--why
moment=force x distance;why not force^(2/3)x distance^(4/3) or for that matter or why Gravitational force inversely proportional to r^2 ;why not
inversely proportional to (r^2 +r^(-190000000))
The same works true in medical exploration-facts.OK take a v.basic accepted truth.Brothers and sisters of the same parents cannot get married or else will produce offspring of low IQ or with defects.Where is the genetic 'calculation' other than tons of experimental facts/real life example to support it.
The sun definitely sent out tons of unknows particles and sure have effects on our climate. The problem is ONLY HOW.;and what to look for.

Well, today sunspots 1280-1286 is showing a good display of flare at the edge of the sun and go to spaceweather website to learn how such perpendicular to earth flare is affecting even our radio communication.IF you are using only white light;you cant even see it!! No proof, then perhaps its due to supernova....? or to terrorist jamming worldwide radio communication.
