Borders kicks off massive clearance sale on Friday

SINGAPORE: Book lovers can look forward to a massive book sales from Borders for five days starting this Friday.

The bookstore, which said it's closing its flagship store at Wheelock Place because of a dispute with its landlord, is selling off its books from 50 per cent off.

A media release from the store Wednesday said the sale will be at the Singapore Expo Hall 4B, from 10am to 10pm, from this Friday till next Tuesday (September 2-6).

Worldwide, the Borders Group is also closing its stores by the end of September.

Singapore's Borders Bookstore had stood strong even as its US and Australia branches closed one after the other, struggling to keep up with digital media.

Saw from Straits Times today that Borders Singapore put up a notice of intention of sale of the Marine Parade branch. Looks like its days are truly numbered, even though Borders Singapore is not managed by the Borders Group.

I don't frequent Orchard. But I do shop at Parkway quite often. Will be sad to see the Parkway branch close. Vividly remember book lovers were at a loss when the previous tenant MPH vacanted and joy when news that Borders had taken over.

I believe some of us staying at Marine Parade or East Coast will have this same feeling.

Wonder who will be the new tenant taking over the big floor space...Kinokuniya perhaps ??? [smilie=cool.gif]

It appears that booksellers are a dying business.

It was only last year that Barnes & Nobel was close to being sold. And frequent travelers would not have missed how many times the bookstores in Changi Airport Terminals 2 & 3 have changed hands!

Kinokuniya is probably still around because the Japanese business model allows for 5-10 years before breaking even. Even now when I consider how much floor area Kinokuniya is taking in a prime area, I wonder if they are making a profit?
