I'm not sure what others think but I personally prefer to be able to browse the recent topics without having to login. It's more convenient.
Is there a possibility of displaying just the post headers, but you'll have to log in to read the post? This way people will be encouraged to join the forum without making the forum look too cold.
I prefer to have non-login access to the forums too. In particular, new users may never know what they are missing out when they come to the homepage and only see a few topics listed.
