Weird things in Wiki Page

Post by Sam Lee »

Hi Admins,

I was browsing our WIKI when i found some weird things appearing. Seems to be hanging my browser also.

I was browsing
http://www.singastro.org/web/mediawiki/ ... _telescope
when i noticed it.

Then when i surf thru a couple more pages, they are appearing everywhere.
Its those strange URL links on the top of the page and also weird charactors appearing within the page.

If you dont see it, please let me know.
I can do a printscreen and upload it somewhere.

Rgds,
Sam

Yup, I see them too. It could be a spam bot adding those spam links in our Wiki pages.

Thanks. I see them too but oddly, they cannot be edited away. I will let Chris know and see if he can do anything.

Looks like the links were added by a bot?
They were edited using username DarroLeldr.

o.o

Looks like all user name with 10 characters in the form XxxxxXxxxx are quite suspicious.
From AcchiZelri to ZelctRctrv.
But they could easily change this pattern.

Hi Chris has been informed and he has provided some tips for the mods to reduce some of the problems indicated. Cheers

Hi,

do you have any plan to update MediaWiki to the latest version? (Is it MediaWiki?)
It is easier to undo/revert changes in the latest version.

Has the problem been solved now? Should we start cleaning the wiki?

Hi djoko,

I would like to upgrade to the latest version, but there is a lack of know-how and available hands. Would you like to help?

Maybe we could link up with Derek at Astronomy.sg ( http://www.singastro.org/viewtopic.php?t=6926 )
and host the wiki there instead. Transferring the info looks easier than cleaning up all the spam.

Ultimately, it would be better if we could have 1 source for astronomy news and information in Singapore.

Anyone else has thoughts on this?

Rgds,
Chris

It would be good if someone with the know-how can offer to help maintain and even host the site :)
We do it in the dark...
Portaball 12.5"
Takahashi Mewlon 210
William Optics 110ED
...and all night long!
