A handy Visual aid - Field of view FOV calculator

I stumbled across this FOV calculator which shows how an astro object will look - size wise - for a given telescope and eyepiece (for visual) Or telescope and camera (for imaging).

You can choose from a list of messier, Caldwell, solar system for the astro targets. The list of telescopes, cameras ( dslr and ccd) and eyepieces looks quite comprehensive. There are a number of FOV calculators out there but I found this useful as it gives me a visual aid as oppose to trying to imagine what one degree and arc seconds look like. Good for a newbie like me who have no perception of how an object will look for a given telescope/eyepiece/camera combination.

Hi Joyce,

Was encouraged by your photos taken in Australia. I am trying to get my DSLR to work with Megrez 90. This FOV calculator comes in very handy. Thanks

Alfred

Hi Alfred, the FOV simulator helps me make a list of what are reasonable imaging targets for my Borg 45ED. But the downside is that I also use it to scout for scopes that will give a better FOV which could contribute to GAS (aka gear acquisition syndrome). I kinda regret selling the Megrez 90 cos using the simulator, the image for M83 (southern pinwheel galaxy) would look soooo much better than my miniBorg. But am glad the Megrez is put to good use and look forward to see your astro photos from it.

As aside, when I see your amazing, highly detailed pictures of the sun, I too am tempted to try Solar photography but must resist GAS and avoid getting a sun tan.

Hi Joyce,

I am taking too long to do DSO astrophotography with the Megrez 90. For now I have another excuse - I am building a observation/imaging point on top of my roof :) It should be ready in Aug. Will post photos for comments. In the meantime I am watching singastro, learning and taking notes of the valuable points from all the sifus :)
