Where do I begin?

Post by blzl09 »

I am really interested in astronomy but I do not have much knowledge about it, almost none in fact. Where or how should I start learning about it?

Books of course! :)
The library has many in their catalogue.
But you can learn the practical aspects by joining one of the many obs sessions before doing additional reading too.
For starters, do read our FAQ section for the basics.
And lastly, a warm welcome to Singastro!

Welcome to the forum!

Start learning by reading books as suggested by Airconvent. You can try to borrow astronomy related books at section 520 in national libraries. Some good books are Secrets of Stargazing, Practical Astronomy and for astronomical equipment, Star Ware.

You can also buy some good beginner books from Kinokuniya at Takashimaya - e.g. The Backyard's Astronomers Guide.

At the same time, try to participate as many free public stargazing sessions as possible - those organised by members in this forum and Friday sessions at Science Centre Observatory and Galaxy Community Club.

In case you are thinking of buying a telescope soon, beware not to buy one on impulse. Do your basic homework first, e.g. reading up about astronomy and telescopes and attending stargazing sessions.

Good luck and have fun exploring the Universe!

Welcome welcome..
To the "Cockroach" hobby.
Huh you will be busy and alert at night while others sleeping beautifully.

Begin by browsing the Astronomy Forums and join the sidewalk astronomy session to talk to those there.

How long have you been interested in Astronomy?
Long time already or just a spur of the moment?
