I think with computerized systems its now much easier to locate objects than the old star hopping method hence its far less of an issue starting with large, long focal length system.
Having said that, size and complexity can now become a major factor as well since a 12" dob is both bulky and heavy and (relatively) complex to use (setup, cooldown, collimation)
