Re: Celestron Advanced VX Mount
I'm just curious, can these sorts of 'big' mounts be used in Singapore? Or others such as the CG5 or the CGEMs?

Hi jeffyen,
Yes this type of mount can be use in singapore.
as long as it is able to point at around 1.2 degrees north.
As for the VX mount, the specs indicates that it can point to about +7 degrees north.
a little modding is being need to use this mount in singapore.

Dave Ng

Re: Celestron Advanced VX Mount
this is not a big mount. it is the replacement for the CG5. so it is a small mount.

Hi Orly,
Do agree with you that is this just a replacement for the current GC5.
But with add funtions!

Re: Celestron Advanced VX Mount
haha any mount to me that's bigger than a tripod mount is BIG!
I've read some posts years ago about the hardware needing mods for it to work at the Equator. Is the story still the same? Is there any 'big' mount say from Celestron that can be used without actually making substantial changes to the structure?
Edit: OK I just saw that it's from 7 degrees, and the scale displays from 0 degrees. So it may be quite possible to use it locally without too many 'problem's...

Re: Celestron Advanced VX Mount
Hi
I'm thinking of buying Celestron Advanced VX 6 Inch Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope or the Celestron Advanced VX 8 Inch EdgeHD Telescope both are VX mount.
Some questions:
1. What modification do i need in order for this mount to be use in SG? And how difficult is it? I'm new to this...
2. I'm starting with visual but would progressively like to do some AP. Which of the 2 is better? I'm concern that the 8" has a longer FL and will need additional accessories ($$$)...
Thanks!

Re: Celestron Advanced VX Mount
Hi
I wrote to Celestron on this and they told me I have to build a pier to for the mount to sit on... otherwise the counterweight would run into the tripod legs. I believe this should work... Is that true? If so, how do i build a pier?
They also mentioned that all their German equatorial mounts needs the pier to work in Singapore??? I don't believe it as I have seen guys operating the scope without the pier.
Appreciate your advise. Thanks!

Heyjojos: this is an example of a pier, although I'm not sure if it can fit the VX mount.., it fits between your mount and tripod legs, and raises the mount so that the counterweight bar won't hit the legs when doing polar alignment
