Self made modular system

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Self made modular system

Post by superiorstream »

Hi All
Had been trying to made some modular Scope out of old bino lens and perhaps even apo doublet.
Recently successful in making
1)A 80mm f/7 apo doublet
2)Various shorttube 100mm, 80mm,60mm monocular handheld. Its pretty light and best suited for Comet watching. The 100mm one
Is only 1.5kg.
Photo coming soon.

Hi Alvin
Yes looking forward to a more fitting ring and
hope you can upload the photos for me....on this thread and also the ...shootiing sun and moon
using high zoom camera thread.
Frankly its a long time dream come true esp.
the 100mm hand held (at 1.5kg).Really love that
and looking forward to observing a comet using
it. [smilie=good-luck.gif]

Hi All
Firstly thanks Alvin for the upload and also All those who had sold me camera and astro stuff or who had help me buy them. They include Alvin (GRS),kkk26 (koko),rlow, chee yuin,Remus, croy,
Gary, astrosiaw,Albert, ......just to mention a few. Also worth mentioning is all those ....give up the
hobby sale .......which had provided me with quite some useful stuff.
Basically this modular scope is to provide transportability to my scope. Thus the body is made from extension tubes with camera thread
like 95mm ,105mm,86mm,82mm ,77mm and 72mm. They are about 1 ins long and when assembled become the optical tube.
It should be noted that some of these diameter tube just fit the common tube ring from orion and
hence is useful in mounting the OTA.....to be continued.

wow.. just saw this thread. 2nd pic looks like Telephoto lens! wondering where did you get so many rings to thread in to make scope tube.

Hi koko
Thanks for the attention. Now continue the discussion. The 1 inch long tubes were specifically made for the purpose and some are actually commonly available. ...although not cheap.
As for the focuser I use a new approach
.Those crayford type focuser for me is too heavy;so I
basically cut it into 2 operating component
..first a rough focus component with sliding
tube and then a fine focusing component which
usually is a helical focuser maybe even a helical focusing eyepiece.
Of course everything is joined together by adapter rings. ......basically with camera thread
That basically is how it's done although a good knowledge of what's camera thread; ?what
diameters are used in telescope and what's used in microscope. .......not to mention there are various old camera thread like 27mm;and also
Strange thread like48.5mm and 52.5mm.All these are necessary to made the correct choice of suitable component.

Finally come the choice of lens. Its quite a headache. Due to the fact that since the tube
are made of 1 in long components it cannot be too
long.....and I think the longest I am willing to make is shown in the 1st photo. ....a f7.6 80mm refractor. Later I made another one of similar length using a 100mm f/5 lens
.Both OTA have same weight of 3.5 kg only (with tube rings and vixen type dovetail attached).
As for the lens doublet is use as triplets are TOO heavy.
As for me the purpose for doing this is clear....l
want thing light and portable
The last photo shows a 100mm f/4 scope of only
1.5kg (a 7x50 bino easily weighs 1.25kg).

Hi
Someone just message me and wonder if O made my own scope...answer is no.Rather I took the lens from available scope and turn it into a modular one.
Reason----Owning a car is too expensive in Singapore. ....COE at $50 a day not to mention road tax ,petrol etc.Doing observation sometime
need the scope be transport ed to another location
and without a personal car ....impossible when
using conventional scope. Using a borg may overcome it but that design is very restrictive as it uses ring thread like 77.8mm etc which nobody
produces accessories. Thus I decided to made
my own CAMERA THREAD MODULAR SYSTEM...
With the advantage of ready cheaper components.
