About time to buy bigger apos?

Post by MooEy »

Just curious, anyone of u considering buying one of those larger apos, say maybe 5" or 6"?

I was looking around, seems like the astreya apo lens in cells are going for 2.6k usd for the 5" f/7 and 3.3k usd for the 6" f/7. full ota are going for 3.8k usd for 5" and 4.6k usd for the 6". seems like a bargain compared to the top tier apos from ap/tak.

someone mention from the other post abt sv scopes. seems like vic is interested in launching the 130ed at around 2.3k range, once again tempting.

the scope that i'm really looking at is the borg 125ed. being at less than 6kg makes it one of the most "usable" 5" apo. 2nd handed prices goes at around 2.3k usd. anyone have any comments on the borg 125ed?

usd seems to be at a all time low, less than 1.5 to 1. tempting, tempting.

TOA130s also costs 4k. It is a better choice.

Becareful about companies waving the APO flag around their telescopes. IMHO, many doublets are not APOs. Some may be very very close but as Roland has said, there is no way to totally correct for color in a doublet.

Vic is not calling the 130ED an APO. He does not label his doublets as APOs though their color correction will rival and beat many other 'brand name' doublet 'APO' telescopes.

I've had 5", 6" and 7" APOs. All triplets or Petzals and I can tell you to be prepared to have a semi permanant place to use them.

A 6" refractor is NOT a small piece of equipment. My AP180EDT was taller then me if I stood it on the focuer on end. The AP155EDF was shorter, but still a pain to move around, esp since tripets are very front heavy with all that glass concentrated in the front third of the OTA.

I think the sweet spot is around 5". Any of the 127 - 140mm OTAs are the perfect size for me. Fits in the trunk (or boot for all you english speakers) sideways in my car (Audi S4) and allows me to fit the rest of my equipment as well without totally loosing my rear seats.

good pointfs from vincent. another thing to add, the Borg125ED is really light, owned two twice in separate occasions, but it is hard to come by nowadays, and only available second hand. Keep watch on astromart perhaps, or i can let you know if i see one. There are probable news (perhaps rumours) that Borg is coming out with larger refractors soon that are optimised for DSLR imaging. Stay tuned.

Umm... you DO know that he has passed away right? I'm still eyeing that 130SS. But might have to put that on hold because I'm in negotiations to lease a setup @ NMS!! My C14 riding on a Paramount ME with an STL11K and possibly a FSQ106N riding shotgun.

Woohoo... imaging heaven.

heh, correction, not bigger apo, maybe bigger refractor. somehow i'm a little weak towards these all lens designs. the idea of being able to binoview without corrector seems fun. but since i have never tried it out, i wonder how well it will work out.

i'm looking at the borg 125ed due to it's extreme lightweight. prolly can ride on one of those smaller mounts. i dun drive, anything over 8kg for ota alone is going to end up sitting in my room and getting very little use. makes me wonder how heavy is the sv130ed . currently own the 3" sv at1010, pretty heavy scope for a 3". sv scope built like tanks, got a strong feeling the sv 130ed will be the same.

btw, how u get the toa130 for 4k usd?

Moey:

We got it from Japan:
http://www.goto-kyoei.co.jp/netshop/cam ... index.html
http://www.seihosha.co.jp/sale_200709.html
The typical price is slightly lower than 500,000 Yen. However the price will increase 6% from Oct.

please open up your eyes and note that it is the S version...the one with 2.7" focuser. NOT the 4" version. That is more expensive.
