do you really need 20" scope for astrophotos?

everytime i flip s&t or astronomy and look at the galleries, i notice that alot of the selected photo are done with huge rcos and big ccd cameras. 12.5" - 16" seems to be the norm now, few more years 20" might be common.

i read the DDM85 mount short review on Jan 09 S&T. It cost a whopping US$18k. It seems that its selling point is a mount head without gears!!! Anyway from the review, DDM - Direct-drive mount.
