Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

CG5 @ 1° N

Post by enewmen »

Hi all.

I just got a new CG5 mount. Looks nice.
But I can't get the latitude down to 1° for use in Singapore.
After removing some parts, I got it down to 10°.
So, how do I get this all the way down?

Others use a CG5 here, so there must be a way.

thanks!

BTW, the counter balance weights don't hit the tripod legs, so at least this isn't a problem.

You will require Pier to get it 1' lat.

A pier?

The plastic part of the controller (neat the on/off switch) is hitting the area near the Azimuth Alignment screws.
I don't see how a pier can help if the counter weight is NOT hitting the legs.

I think I'm missing something basic.

thanks!

Maybe a picture would help.. I see so this is the CG-5 ASGT.

Worst case lengthen the leg opposite the counterweight to get it down to 1 Lat.

It seems I will have to do this as well on my CGEM (only goes to 15 Lat).

The best I can get is 8°.
I think it's time to start cutting the controller plastic to get this down further.

It looks like I can squeeze a few more degs in if I remove the controller or cut the plastic.

Here are some photos:

It seems like extending the height with a pier won't help since the problem is with the plastic blocking the way. Extending the tripod leg might be the best contemporary solution without breaking the plastic.

This is a suggestion from Kimo:

I just need to get a half-pier, then change the angle to allow the mount to be used normally. The half-pier will also keep the counter-weights from banging the legs.

Just one thing - careful considerations shall be given for the pier construction since I have heard from some of the users that quite often the pier became the most unstable section of the assembly, thus affecting the tracking capability and loading capacity.

Remember, slice of the metal part should be raised the mount south side.
