Talk Title: "Meteors, and many more, By Video" by Y.K. Chia
Venue: National University of Singapore, Science Faculty (Block S13, 2nd Level Seminar Room 14 - designation S13-02-14)
Date: 8th September 2006, Friday
Time: 1830HRS (6:30PM)
[Additional: the speaker will also touch on satellites, birds,
airplanes and Iridium flares]
Talk Content:
The speaker will enlighten the audience on meteor fundamentals. He
will also give an insight on the interesting people he has met which
comprises of half of the world's leading meteor researchers (in his
Leonids meteor storms' overseas expeditions, et cetera). He will also
engage the audience with the evolution of video techniques/hardwares
over recent years. The talk will end with a random pick of actual
meteors detected through the speaker's unique way from our local skies
and as well as an example of non-meteor- Iridium satellite flares
captured (using a similar setup configuration). This wil culminate
with a carefully hand-picked recent "WOW" example from overseas
attempts using the same software.
Speaker Bibliography:
The guest speaker, Mr Chia Yeong Kwong (a.k.a ykChia), had
developed a fond interest on astronomy since he was a young lad in the
1970s. He had a particular interest in comets, meteors and Man-made
Satellite-observations. Over the years he had traveled to several
countries to witness Leonids meteor showers (in chilly Jordan's desert
camp and Korea's mountain tops) and even participated in a futile
air-borne charted flight to attempt to watch the de-orbiting of the
Russian spacecraft, MIR, in the Southern Pacific Ocean. In recent
years he had been monitoring the sky for meteors/satellites or
anything else up in the sky using a simple video lens propped outside
his 12-storey apartment study-room window whenever there was an
opportunity of clear star-lit nights.
Note: There will be a follow-up stargazing session after the talk, weather permitting.

I missed your last talk Remus but will try and make it for this one.
Incidently, why are they always so early at 6.30pm? This would have been inconvenient for those who are working later, especially those far away.
Perhaps the organisers can consider changing the timings for future talks to 7pm instead?
Cheers

Location Directions:
The venue is the same as the astro imaging processing seminar held a few weeks back. Here is the description:
NUS map -> http://www.nus.edu.sg/campusmap/
"From there, to find out the exact location, search for "Department of Physics". There will be a star marked out for you which shows S12. The actual workshop session is held at the adjacent block, S13. For those driving, you may drive into Science Park Drive 3, and park your car at the carpark. Take the lift from S12, stop at level 2, and walk across the S12-S13 connecting bridge, over to S13 side. Move on to room 14, otherwise known as S13-02-14."
