Shanghai Eclipse July 09
For your first solar eclipse, it is always recommended that it be a visual one. But no one listens to that advice (certainly not me!). So we need to go again to do some visuals, and (again) we bring lots of photographic gear... the cycle is neverending...
[80% Steve, 20% Alfred] ------- Probability of Clear Skies = (Age of newest equipment in days) / [(Number of observers) * (Total Aperture of all telescopes present in mm)]
Has anyone planned to go to this place?

Interesting as it's in the middle of the eclipse track.
The latest update is that the Shanghai govt run travel agency is organising trips to the Island for 150RMB per person.
I would expect that entry is usually restricted since it's a working port.
I'll probably be trying out this route, anyone else interested?

It's in Chinese:

is where I heard about it
The "English version" of this is apparently 199 EUR, of course, you don't share the bus with the "Chinese masses", but I think everyone will end up crowding on that island.

On the other hand, another group has settled on Putuoshan near Ningbo

I'm more concerned about the weather forecast/rain/typhoon, and will probably keep my options open between Shanghai, Chengdu and Wuhan until the weather forecast gives a clearer picture.

I plan to watch the eclipse at Jinshan (a.k.a. Jinshanwei), a sea-side town about 60km south of Shanghai. Will be going there with another Singastro member.
There is a write-up by Jay Anderson on weather conditions along the eclipse track here:

After planning first to go to the Jinshan beach in the south of Shanghai I am in serious doubt now. It takes about one hour from the metro station by bus. Certainly one can take a taxi but at least an exact timing might be difficult (e.g. to see the first contact at 8h23m local time).
It might be much easier to go to the town of Jiaxing on the way to Hangzhou. From Shanghai (main) railway station or from Shanghai south railway station the train needs just 35 minutes to Jiaxing. The umbral duration in Jiaxing is 5m51s comparing with 5m00s in the center of Shanghai.
At least Jiaxing may be an option in case of cloudiness an the beach.
Meet me in Jiaxing at 22th :-)

Here is a useful webpage on Jay Anderson's website for forecasting the weather on the day of the eclipse. It has "Links to Forecast Resources for Eclipse Day":

However, I doubt many of us will be able to adjust travel plans at the last minute.
