Need some advice on Milky Way post-processing

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Need some advice on Milky Way post-processing

Post by vngks »

Hi all,

Did some wide angle Milky Way shots while I was at the White Desert in Egypt. Beautiful seeing, moon was below horizon, no light pollution. Taken the single shot below with my 550D modded with Astrodon Ha filter on Astrotrac - single frame 120s f2.8 ISO800.

Do the colors look weird?

I'm a noob in PPing MW. Tried stacking 10 shots and 2 Darks in DSS, followed some guides on the net but found that the pic looks weird, really CMI. Anyone got a easy-to-follow-step-by-step guide on PPing MW shots after DSS will be much appreciated.

Cheers.

I think the Milky Way you shot here is still quite low at the horizon, right? Hence the gradient that can be seen in the picture.

Hi Chip, yup, the center was actually halfway under the horizon.

Thanks Jimmy for the compliments :) I'll strive to do better next time.
