CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Comet C/2014 Q2 from Changi Beach - 17 Jan 2015

Post by PETER LOO »

The comet C/2014 Q2 is setting earlier & earlier each day, caught it over a few nights in Tampines, Changi sea-side etc, but the one on 17 Jan 2015 looks slightly better
Shooting Data: 210s (Av) X6 @ ISO 1600, Canon 550 D un-mod, combined, No Gaussian Blur for this one here (slight diff from F/B one), Log stretched. GPD2 mount SSAG guided, MaximDL & Nebulosity processed, since alignment reference is Comet center Core, all stars appear to shift but Comet appeared fixed.

good catch you have there, Peter! Ion tail streamers are clearly evident.

Thanks Remus and Airconvent, there is one common thing in us (fellow Astro hobbyist), once bitten by the "Astro Bugs", will not be able to quit for life regardless of the variation in methods, approach & instruments used in enjoying this hobby. As pass few months were rainy season, i had switched to guitar playing & had contemplated to sell off all my astro gears (low cost one though) to get a hand crafted guitar, now think of it, luckily didn't ( it seems silly for me to exchange ED glasses for Nylon & Wood ) :D

not bad! you got the tail...

a lot more subs would clean up the star field, but from my balcony even with 20+ 2-minute subs i can't get the tail..

Thanks Orly, yah, Changi sea-side North sky is not bad, but once the mount do a Meridian crossing flip & enter into North West Sector, the light pollution from the street lamps along the sea-side pour in, so can only do North East portion before transit. Better if we can go to darker sites, so that a faster system such as Hyper Star can be deployed, then we can get a single shot with nice tail & yet no star trails. But as for combined shots, i think those who managed to clean up the star trails are registering the Stars & Comet separately in their post processing, probably using Pixingsight & then re-combine them, not very sure how they do it but i believe it can be done. Saw one of our F/B Astro enthusiast at North started to "attack" those done more than 3 mins but no star trails, i think he need to read up / study a little more before jumping into conclusion (which i also fall into this trap sometime)

Lovely (no pun intended) shot! Very nice tail details, especially for an image taken locally.
