My Astrophotography Journey

Post by heyjojos »

Hi
Sharing my astrophotos with you all and also documenting the settings. Would like comments on how to do it better... especially the post processing part which is still a trial-and-error for me right now. Need fellow bros to help me with some questions I have : )
Photos are edited via LR.

#1. Milk Way taken in May, Mersing. Thankful for the cloudless nights!!!
Canon 6D, ISO 3200, 43s, 14mm F2.8, WB 3000
Can post postprocessing remove the light pollution glow?
Anyway to make the Milky Way color most standout? [smilie=confused.gif]

#2. First Panoramic try...
Canon 6D, ISO3200, 43s, 14mm F2.8, WB 3200
Question - how do I prevent the star trail looking at the upper right corner? [smilie=confused.gif]
I don't get this for the rest of the photos. Tried to use the distortion option but it's not working.

Hi HJ,

These must be from the recent Mersing trip! Good catches you have there!

I have never really used LR before, but based on PS experience and looking at the LR interface, for your MW image, you could tone down on the shadows under Develop->Basic or via Develop->Tone Curve. Also it will help to increase saturation a little to bring out the MW colours accessible via Develop->Basic. If you have PS, then you could shift the BP to the right just below the histogram hump and you will already have a more contrasty image.

For the second image, if you are using ICE, you really should spend more time experimenting with the distortion models, especially perhaps the non-cylinderical ones.

Have fun!

Hi Remus
Thanks for your tip. Will definitely try them out. Are you referring to the Microsoft Image Composite Editor? I'm a Mac user.. cannot run this program... will try out other softwares to see if there are better ones.

Central Milky Way Region
Taken with ISO 4000, 47mm, F4, 13 sec

I think I can reduce the ISO and bump up the exposure time to reduce the grainy effect?

Hi Hong Joo,

That's a nice and seldom seen angle with the seaside :) Nice, still missing Mersing? haha

Hi
Finally have some time to go back to my hobby. Here's a shot of the Milky Way I took at Eldorado, Texas in the USA recently. Really good dark skies there with little light pollution. I edited my photo in LR but some how I can't correct the vignette on the photo. I did used the lens correction and vignetting options. Any suggestions from the experts here?

Will try to post a few more when I'm done on the post processing :)
