Medium-wide fields 2020

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

2020-Sept-7/8 night

Empty-handed after two hours at ECP. Nevertheless a good practice session to learn more about the lens and imaging software. Again, at F4 in the R filter band, the optical aberration is terrible so that I had to stop down to F5.6.

The biggest enemy was again no other than the unpredictable clouds.

Nonetheless, it was still a happy time under the stars. And a gimpse of the Grus' quartet is better than nothing. Far better indeed.

Back home, the waning moon was high in the easter sky.

NGC6729 and NGC6723

The bright and dark nebuli are difficult to capture under light pollution.

Tried to capture the Grus quartet galaxy group.

Also another try at the NGC6752 the Great Peacock Globular.

When the clouds were largely cleared, I was given the chance to capture a wide field image of the constellation Capricornus with intersting surrounding fields. Using nothing but my handphone in manual mode.

Image

This constellation is middle sized but rather faint. Thanks to the good condition yesterday, my bare eyes (behind spectacles) could make out the member stars down to magnitude 4.3, for the first time ever. Seeing the pattern of this faint constellation is such a joy. Come 2021 I hope to try some overseas dark site for enjoying a better view of this constellation.

I am a little obsessed with this constellation that lacks in deep sky objects (except for M30) simply because it relates to the zodiac sign of my boy. Aha.

There was a time when only a small patch of sky was cleared of clouds. But I knew the drawf planet Pluto was there. Took the image and compared it with another one dated Sept-4. This creates the evidence of Pluto's motion. -- Later it became clear that this visual motion is a composite effect of relative motion between Pluto and the earth.

Aha. My poor astrophotography and processing skills.
Disastrous blue filter image with bloated stars. Disappointed by the lens performance here. Either go further stop down aperture or get some software to deal with it.
