DIY Modified geared head

Post by anat »

Hi:

I have seen that many of you are using the 410 geared head with a photo tripod. I also use it. I would like to share my experience on the geared head. I find that the slow motion is good for tracking but it has limitations on quick hand-panning for star-hopping. So I modified my geared head by
1) making a lock screw for the azimuth release knob
2) making a handle for releasing the altitude and for hand-panning

Another view. When the azimuth release knob is turned open, I turn the brass screw to prevent the release knob returned to lock the azimuth.

Ready for quick starhopping and slow motion tracking. Now it comes close to a unistar mount with slow motion control :)

gwenyi, thank you. The handle was taken (stolen? :) ) from my another manfrotto head.
Charlie, the site is located about 150 km northeast of Bangkok. It is inside a temple.
Rich, thank you for the online store idea. For now, I enjoy DIY for fun :)

Pretty creative, the bicycle chain look-alike is totally awesome. Excellent idea. It looks good too! I can see that a lot of effort is put into this. Well done!
