Baader Solar Filters

Post by chrisyeo »

Hi.

Anyone has experience making a solar filter out of Baader solar film?

Anyone knows how much it costs? I understand Starmatrix sells the film.

Anyone interested in sharing in a project to make a few filters? Each film can be cut into several filters, depending on the aperture.

Hi Chris,

I have made 1 before. Considering the costs of normal 1.25" filters, the Baader solar filter film is quite cheap. It comes in 2 versions, for visual and photography. The one for photography lets more light through for shorter exposure time compared to the visual one. You can ask Starmatrix how much they cost.

How I did mine:

1. Take a thick piece of styrofoam and cut a ring out such that it fits snugly over the opening of the scope.

2. Make 2 concentric rings using firm cardboard. I used a firm plastic-like board (available from Popular Bookshop) which is ribbed for extra strength. You can see the ribbing and the 2 layers in the photo 'Baader1'.

3. Fix the solar film between the 2 boards. You can use super glue or silicone.

4. Attach the boards to the styrofoam. The finish filter is in photo 'Baader2'.

You can use more refined materials and methods, but the basic steps are the same. Ensure the attachment method e.g. glue or tape is secure. You would not want the wind to blow it off when viewing the sun!
