I use one of those key-chain LEDs from Home-fix or similar. They are cheap, last forever, and are easy to dim with pieces of cellopane paper. :)
We do it in the dark...

those key chains were designed to be as bright as possible, so "darkening" it will result in unsightly tapes...
I think I like the cataclysm's LED design better. It uses a standard LED which means it is not bright at all since these are used for indication rather than illumination.

For night-adapted illumination purposes, I've found that SAF torch (the one you hold with a pistol grip) is very good. It comes with own screw on red filter.
