Where to get that foam for telescope cases?

Wanna make a scope? Or better still, grind a mirror yourself. Or, you have some good tips in making a really useful accessory? This is the place to show what your hands can do...

Where to get that foam for telescope cases?

Post by orly_andico »

There are some pretty cheap roller suitcases in Carrefour that could be re-purposed as telescope cases. However I'd need a good quantity of foam for padding the inside (hopefully I can fit an entire EQ head, plus my 70mm refractor, inside the case).

Where can I get that foam?

Hi,

You can try this place:

You have to get the type of foam for photographic equipment. I heard that 'normal' foam (whatever that is) can out-gas and may affect optical coatings.

hey CC

In a 2003 post by kayheem, he quoted $30 for a 3' x 6' x 1" sheet.

Orly, Defu is quite near where we are... 10 mins by car/taxi, not so sure by bus but Kovan MRT should have a connector service.
If my new 'scope works out but comes without travel case, I'll fetch you over to pick up some together :)

I used those colored mats that are joined by 'jig-saw' like connections that are used for babies to play on the floor with! They come in large and smaller squares. Out with a SHARP penknife/cutter and some PVA Glue. You can layer them, build a box, compartments..etc etc! ANd still have several small pieces to make drink coasters for the coffee table...haha!

A suggestion!
My wife never complained about how much time, effort & money I spent on my Astronomy hobby!................suddenly I met her!!!

Actually, the Defu Lane area is full of industrial companies, which can come in very useful. Besides the foam supplier, you can find carpentry shops that can do custom jobs e.g. dob structure manufacture.

You just give them the design and specs and choose the laminate! Prices are quite cheap as you deal directly with the carpenters. Will be helpful if you speak Chinese as a lot (not all) of the workers there are Chinese educated or Chinese from Malaysia.
