Hi Singastroians!

Singastro is proud to announce a photography ‘competition’ for the Singastro community: SingAstroPhotography Challenge 2006!

The idea of this competition is to recognise and encourage our astrophotographers in their art of capturing the beauty of our universe. We also hope to encourage others to try your hand at taking photos. These photos can then become a showcase for all the visitors to our community of the wonders of astronomy.

We’d like to invite submissions for the following categories:
1. Naked eye
2. The Moon
3. The Sun and Planets
4. Star Clusters
5. Nebulae & Galaxies
6. People and Places

There will also be a 'Best Astrophoto of 2006' award for the best astrophoto from all the entries, regardless of equipment. Some explanations of the categories: Naked Eye - photos as you will see with the naked eye. This includes wide-field astrophotos of constellations or the Milky Way, but also scenery, sunsets, clouds, buildings, etc. but must be somehow connected to astronomy. Peoples and Places - Anything of interest to the astronomy community here. E.g. photo of Mooey and CC with their portaballs.

There are no official prizes yet for winning, but you will receive the recognition and humble respect of everyone here at Singastro for producing such wonderful photos in such adverse conditions as living in Singapore. For a start, winners will receive a token certificate and prominent display on the Singastro website, but volunteers who wish to donate prizes are also more than welcome to do so.

-------------------------------------------
Instructions for submitting an entry
-------------------------------------------

Each photo must have been obtained in the calendar year of 2006.

Please add your photo into the Singastro albums either in your personal gallery or in the relevant album, and then post a message with the link of the photo in the relevant thread with the following details:

Category:
Date taken:
A brief description of the photo:
A brief description of equipment used and how you took it:

The maximum size and dimensions of uploadable images has temporarily been increased to 1024x768 and 150kb for this competition. There is no limit to the number of photos you may submit, but each photo can only be submitted for one category.

Submissions will close on [s]November 30th[/s] December 31st.

-------------------------------------------
How the photos will be judged
-------------------------------------------

The winners will be picked based [s]50%[/s] 100% on public voting, [s]and 50% on the judging of 5 appointed judges. [/s]

Submissions will close on [s]Nov 30th[/s] Dec 31st, and public voting will open [s]Dec 1st[/s] 1st Jan. Via the polling system, users will submit their favourite picture for each category. Each registered user is only allowed one vote per category. A mark upon 50 will then be awarded based on the percentage of popular votes. Public voting will close on Friday [s]Dec 16th[/s] Jan 19th.

The judges will each award a mark upon 10, and will factor in the type of equipment used and the object difficulty. Thus, a photo using simpler equipment may get a higher mark due to the greater difficulty. The judges will be picked at the discretion of the SingAstro admin and will be announced publicly at a later date. Each will have had some experience taking astrophotos, and must not have submitted an entry for that category.

The winners will be announced a few days after voting ends.

Thank you for sharing your photos; Good Luck!

Chris,

Can I recommend the following phenomenal works by our resident imager to be included in the "Best of Astrophoto of 2006" category?: http://www.singastro.org/viewtopic.php?t=3248

90 % of the images were taken using an 8" LX90, the rest using 80mm refractor.

Hi Everyone,

Have been meaning to post this. The admin has decided to push the closing date back to 31st December to allow people more time to take and submit their photos. We will also be making a further decision whether we want to admit photos taken before this year as this is the first time this challenge has been held.

I'm sure there are many Singastroians with some great photos to share. . but it's up to them if they'd like to submit it.

Do share your photos if you have any!

Clear Skies!
