Update (11/01/08):

1) So far we have three guest speakers for the event, maybe another one soon.

2) Number of volunteers for the event: ~15 at the moment. Still need more! Especially adults! Don worry, will not take up a lot of time.

3) The first meeting for volunteers (AND anybody else who is keen) would be somewhere after mid february. Tentative location will in the west for now, and held in the evening, likely weekend, or Friday night.

4) Our non-Singaporean friends are most welcomed to come for A2008. Should you need any assistance in coming, or accommodation here in Singapore, please let us know. PM.

5) There will be an astrophotography gallery, and A2008 welcomes all forms of images (taken by you, and not from books!). Please note that the images need not be Gendlerish quality. As long as it is presentable, we will put it up. Astrophotographers! Start shooting! (And again, we welcome images from our overseas friends too!)

Stay tuned!

Update (18/02/08):

Speakers line-up has been confirmed. There will be at least 4 talks of a wide spectrum of topics that will be given on A2008 day. I will realise the synopsis at a later date once the information is gathered from all the various speakers.

Meeting for volunteers: The date for the first meeting (for volunteers, and basically anyone else free to attend and help) will be 14th March 2008, Friday evening. The location is being in the process of confirmation, but I hope to give you the answer by this Wednesday. Thanks again, to all those who have come forth to help out in A2008!

Dear A2008 Volunteers and friends,

The first meeting for A2008 is scheduled for the following date/time:

Date: 21st March 2008(Good Friday Public Holiday)
Time: 4PM
Duration: Hopefully not more than 1 hour!
Venue: National University Physics Conference Room (S13-02-14, Block S13, 2nd floor)

From the previous email, the former date, 14th March is not possible
for the meeting due to clash with an Astronomy Quiz in Nanyang
Polytechnic. As for 21st March, since it is a public holiday, everyone
should be able to make it. If you cannot, please drop me an email, but
it is best to turn up otherwise you will lose track of things.

If you are already a guest speaker for A2008, you do not need to come,
but would appreciate a synopsis write-up soon. Thanks!

Meeting Agenda:
1) Noting down volunteers' particulars
2) Objectives of A2008
3) Structure of event (activities, programme line-up)
4) Allocation of roles for volunteers
5) T-shirt design
6) Logistics Management
7) Any other matters

As mentioned previously, we may be using an alternative location for
A2008 which has all the facilities equivalent to the Singapore Art
Museum, which the additional fact that it can be booked for two days,
that is August 16 and 17.
This may be better since, considering the scale of the event and its
preparations, a two-day A2008 may be more enriching and less hectic.

Lastly, if you would like to volunteer in A2008 and have not signed up earlier, feel free to come attend this meeting. Open to everyone.

Thanks again for everyone's help in this!

See you!

Update (13/3/08):

We have given The Singapore Art Museum the final confirmation to book the Glass Hall venue for A2008. However, like everything else recently, the rental fees have went up. The conditions of rental does not permit any form of sale of goods at the venue on that day to offset the rental costs. As such, we can only seek everyone's help in the form of monetary donations (minimum SGD$50 per person). Of course, this is not a compulsory gesture, but hopefully for those who are not able to help out in this event (due to work, committments, etc), are now able to contribute to the organisation of this event through your heartfelt support in this way. The cost of rental is about SGD$1600 for the entire day, so hopefully we can cover this amount. There will be further other costs definitely, for the purchase of exhibit props, etc, but for now, I will pay whatever that needs to be paid first. In order to facilitate this properly, Sam Lee has come forth to help in the donation drive. Please contact him directly and leave the following particulars with him:
1) full name
2) contact number
3) donated amount
4) day of donation

You may contact him through PM, cell phone (91837064), or email (platinum_jem at yahoo dot com)

As a form of recognition, donations will have their names listed in this forum thread (in front).

Thanks a lot!

Hi Clifford and rest,

Here is a URL link to the NUS campus map:
http://www.nus.edu.sg/campusmap/

Block S13 is next to Science Drive 3 which can be assessed from Lower Kent Ridge Road. You may enter into NUS from the NUH side, which means you will go along this road (Lower Kent Ridge Road). Look out for Science Drive 3 on your left. The track and field is nearby.

Update (20/03/08):

Few things:

1) Last reminder - A2008 Meeting is tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

2) Telescope Display for A2008: A portion of the Glass Hall will be dedicated to the Telescope Display segment. The purpose of the Display is to showcase telescope instruments used by our local astronomical community, for the public. This would highlight the different types of telescopes (and usage/function) available, and at the same time provide a form of interactive connection between the telescope (plus the owner) and the public. As such, the A2008 Crew would like to invite any SINGASTRO member out there who is keen to participate in bringing their telescope(s) for this event. Please PM at email me at remuscj at yahoo dot com with details (name, telescope model, contact number). ASAP.

3) Solar/Lunar/Planetary Viewing Sessions for A2008: Similar to point (2), if you are keen to volunteer your telescope for the viewing sessions, please let us know as well.

Notes: Please try to arrange your own transport to bring the telescope to the Singapore Art Museum on that day (16 August). It is highly recommended to reach and have the telescope setup by the official opening hour of 10AM. At this point in writing, we are trying to get volunteer drivers to facilitate help in transporting these telescopes, but at the moment, there are only a handful (with vehicles). There will be a group photo taken at 5PM (on that day) together with (hopefully!) telescopes. It would probably be the biggest group photo taken of any local astronomical community here, so do not miss it!

Thanks!

Remus,

Thanks for this iniative. I think it is great.

I will support by giving a donation first, and do let me know if you need more scopes, equipment, etc.

Guys, let's make this a success.
