16" ATM Project

Post by acc »

Finally this long overdue project by Chuang Yee, Wira and myself is getting off the ground. It had been a long - seven - months delay by Discovery Telescopes in fulfilling our order for the mirrors and parts.

The primary mirror is 16.1" in diameter, which is just a shade larger than the current largest scope in Singapore (The Science Centre Observatory's 40cm Pentax). So that gives us a bit of bragging rights... heheh :D

Will be posting updates here as the construction of the scope progresses. Hopefully it will be completed soon and an 'open house' organised. Will the weather gods have mercy on us.

Hmmm, we have not thought of giving it one... But now that you have mentioned it, sounds like a good idea. Suggestions welcomed. :D

Hope that the 'New Scope Curse' is proportional to the aperture of the new scope!

Hi charlie,
do you mean "Hope that the 'New Scope Curse' is NOT proportional to the aperture of the new scope!"

Some possible names:

The Wichienyee (after the owners but sounds like an indigestion pill)
The WCCCY (after the owner initials)
The Great Singapore Scope (GSS - apt but may be confused with the other annual GSS)
The Temasek Telescope (TT) (after singapore)
The SILANEPROSINAS ( what the amercians like to do...acronymns - Singastro Large Aperture Newtonian Project by Singapore astronomers)
MSIABBTY! (Another acronym - My Scope is a Butt Bigger than Yours!)
The Scope (simple and to the point)

In true Wayne's World fashion, we may also introduce new terms like
"wow....your scope is Scopealicious!" ,
"shall we "scope" tonight at Dempsey?
"he barlowed at top speed to dempsey so he would not miss the scopealiciously clear skies..".

Suggestions:

1. Sweet Sixteen
2. Behemoth

At 16", you can tell practically anyone in Singapore that yours is bigger than theirs. :D
