Sea Monkeys

Post by Airconvent »

Hi all,
Anyone has experience with sea monkeys?
After 3 weeks, I am down to 3 only! There were 4 yesterday but one died today.
I aerated the tank, did everything the manual said but to no avail
If this last 3 die, then its game over as Toys-R-Us does not sell eggs by themselves, only the other stuff (which I have bought everything..plasma, extra water treatment pack, etc)
Anyone has successfully breed them?
I'm thinking if the temp here is too high for them?

For those who do not know, here is the site :

Ah, sea monkeys. I did have some during my lower sec days. They lived for a few months.

I think there is this part in the manual that explains how you can 'resurrect' your dead sea monkeys. Go check it out. It's not game over yet ! :D

too late, I did some cleaning as part of my "recovery" programme. probably removed all traces of residual eggs from the container as I flushed the container clean after transferring the monkeys out...
but at least they lasted a few months..mine seems to be "booking" out after a few weeks...

Sea Monkeys are actually Brine Shrimps which fish keepers usually buy them to feed their fishes being fresh or marine. I usually bought them from fish retailer/farm at about S$3 per packet (more than 500 pcs of > than 1/3" length). A bottle of egg can be bought for about S$10. You can hatch them in appropriate salt water salinity and let the mature to about 3/4" but it will take a bit of effort. Trying searching 'brine shrimp' and you will have lot of infos for them.

brine shrimps...i hatch them to feed my fishes and corals and sometimes i buy the adult ones for my bigger fishies
i might noe a thing or 2
maybe u can msg me with a few quest and i'll try my best to answer
or u can check out http://people.westminstercollege.edu/fa ... brine.html
i tink wat u need to keep them alive is phytoplankton...a kinda microscopic algae...t article mentions them as filter feeders and its obvious from the same article that they r herbivores so phytoplankton would be suitable for them

says on the website those brine shrimps are hybrids..they claim it "grow larger and live longer than any "natural" variety of brine shrimp."

Hi all
Thanks for your reply.
As mentioned, the article claims that the sea monkeys are a hybrid specially created as pets. I don't know about the brine thingy. I have not tasted the water before but I needed to add this packet of something 24 hrs before I add the eggs in. if you ask me, if they were salt, that's too little to make such a large amount of sea water salty. I presume the sea monkeys were bred to survive in freshwater instead?

In anycase, I only have 3 sea monkeys left today, so if they survive, so much the better...if not, I still have 2 packets of "food" (greenish stuff) that is supposed to last almost 2 years, plasma to make them grow faster, a an additional water treatment pack. etc.

I wonder if it is a good idea to buy common brine shrimp and add it in. will they survive in relatively bland water like what its like in my sea monkey aquarium?

Also, I still have not establish the real cause of the current batch's demise...due to temperature in singapore too hot? bacteria as I do not sterilise the equipment like what a sea monkey breeder recommends?
the same breeder says that once algae is growing, by adding a small live sea weed, the tanks becomes self sustaining and no food is needed to be added!

BTW Wee Kiong/Shoelevy, where can I buy the brine shrimp in more common areas? do aquariums stock them? don't want to go all the way to a farm to buy them...

Off-off topic : anyone has tried triops before? they looked like cockcroaches, live only a few months but are more hardy than sea monkeys..$10 for a pack of eggs + feed...
