Observatory
hello people this is my first time making a post at this place. Just wanna ask if the sci centre conducts "night observatory" lessons for free or whether do they open their observatory and stargazing equipment for the public to see. I would be very interested in going for these kinda things, being an amatuer astronomy enthusiast.. hehe I tried posting such qns to sci centre liao but they nvr replied when they are opened of if they do open their observeatory for the public.. can anyone help me in this? thanKS!~

Hi,
Have you try writing to them or calling them?? I talk to the new person-in-charge a few days ago and he told me that you need to write in to request for tickets (as instructed in the science centre website).
Anyway, if I remember correctly, I think the next public observation for the observertory is on 18 March. If you pop-up on that day, I think they won't "reject" you... hee hee
By the way, the last time I was there, the public actually didn't have much time to observe through the telescope... it just too many people.
Have a nice day.

Hi Aeonz,
I have went to one of those public observation at the Science center before. Tell u wat, I think u should go to one of those Singastro obs instead. Regarding ur questions on the observatory, I when there as I saw on the newspaper about the public obs. I check the TASOS site after the obs, they seem to post the public obs too. BTW, the crowd there is only abt 16 or so. The obs is not veri conducive and useful as the everyone crowd over one scope, thus u can only 'peep' for a few second. Only a few objects are viewed, as the most of the time the scope operater is spending time entertaining banal and mediocre questions thrown in by the public. The time frame also veri short, I thing 2000hrs to 2200hrs only. :k-shock: :k-=X: :beep: :k-crazy:
Singastro obs better, more variety of scopes, more time to interact with scope owners. Also can find out how the objects look in a amateur scope. :-k-yeah: :k-woohoo:

Hi Aeonz,
I am a current member of TASOS and they have viewing sessions about once a month for members only. However, the weather and light pollution there is such that there actually is not much point viewing there.
Instead, join Weixing or other members on their regular observations when the weather is clear. You can learn all you want about observing and equipment by viewing with us. No experience or equipment required. Just look out for info on the "observation sessions" section of the forum on planned obs.
Cheers,
Chrisyeo

About Night Obs
Hmm is being a singastro member equivalent to being a TASOS member? how to get the TASOS membership and eventually be eligible for these night obs? hmm i fear that i have very limited astro knowledge to mingle with all the pro~ such that it becomes annoying when i ask too many qns and thus disturbing the whole night obs process hehe... tts why i thought of attending lessons.. at least get some basics right first.. so i can ask more intelligent ,less irrational and unrelated qns on these professional nght obs.. hehe

Hi,

So, don't worry about it. Just join in and have fun.
Anyway, we are learning all the time... we chit chat, share experience and exchange knowledge during observation session... that why we post our observation session here, so that people interested in astronomy can join in and learn together...
Have a nice day.
