Nikon D70 or Canon EOS 350D

Post by QuantumGravity »

Last week i visited the IT show at Suntec and was thinking about getting a DSLR. To me, there are two main cameras which are in my buget (under $2k) - that is the Nikon D70 and Canon 350D. The 350D being recently released, there are very few comparisons between it and D70. However, finding a D70 vs 300D comparison was easier. Most reviews said that D70 had a edge over Canon 300D, but hey, it's 350D now, with 8mp and all that upgrades.

Asking those dudes at the IT show only confuses me, as of course they'll only flame the other camera and support theirs. Also, after reading some comments and reviews, more people seem to support what they have (a nikon-er will love his nikon).

Which one should i get, as both are roughly near the same price? I'll be using the camera for normal photography as well as astrophotography.

P.S. as the D70 is already nearly a year old, i'm scared that nikon suddenly would come up with another upgrade of the D70 to combat the 350D. then the D70 would be "outdated". hmm...

quite hard to decide. probably easier to flip a coin than to figure out which is better. the canon has more megapixel but the nikon has a better kit lens. i may pick the 350d over the d70 due to the vertical grip, but nikon's sb600 flash seem to be better value.

i don't think nikon will bother about coming up another camera to match the 350d, they never seemed to bothered about the competition. it's canon who is constantly coming up with new models to match nikon.

i'll most likely use it for terrestrial, but is the D70 effective enough for astro?

There are rumours that Nikon is coming up with 2 new models this year. Nikon has also registered "D50" as a trademark recently. If you are not in a hurry, I suggest you wait it out.

If you can't wait, join the local Clubsnap forum (www.clubsnap.com) where there are people in the "Buy and Sell" forum doing mass sales of the 350D and D70 at extremely attractive prices with genuine warranty.

If you want megapixels and a compact camera, go for 350D. If you want the traditional solid feel of a semi-pro camera, go for the Nikon. The Nikon comes with a better kit lens.

the next model from nikon would probably be a mid range slr body to replace the d100. most likely they would only announce it during the next pma, which would be next year. as for the d50, i think that would be maybe the next next pma, or even the next next next pma.
