Jupiter and Saturn Apparition 2021

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

As we inch ever closer to Jupiter's opposition, I'm back to post more images of this wondrous gas giant world!

Seizing upon the golden opportunity of a clear Friday evening, I set up my trusty C9.25 downstairs for another session of planetary imaging under moderate to good seeing conditions. The first set of images containing the Great Red Spot were unfortunately taken during moderate seeing conditions, but fair amounts of details can still be extracted.

The Great Red Spot (GRS) dominates the South Tropical Belt as usual, with its centre being very darkly orange coloured. The South Tropical Zone following the Great Red Spot (GRS) is very turbulent. In the methane band image of taken around the same time, it is noted that the Equatorial Zone and the South Polar Region is bright, indicating strong methane concentration and high clouds in the Jovian atmosphere. The GRS is also brightly lit in methane band images.

The seeing conditions gradually improved as Jupiter rose higher in the sky, and combined with better transparency after the mid to high clouds cleared later into the night, I was able to capture some high-resolution images of the gas giant (albeit without the GRS).

Under better seeing conditions, the 3 dark-centred condensations on the northward edge of the North Equatorial Belt are clearly resolved. In addition, it is thrilling to see the many dark nodules in the North Polar Region, as well as bright storms in the South Polar Region. The Equatorial Zone has an orange hue, indicating suppressed convection revealing deeper parts of the atmosphere.

Another shot at capturing the magnificent gas giant Jupiter. The seeing and transparency last night was good, and j didn't go around letting this opportunity go to waste.

Jupiter's fourth Galilean moon Callisto is featured during its transit across the face of Jupiter in the west, with cyclonic storms dotting the South Temperate Zone. The equatorial zone still has a pale orange hue due to the cloud clearing event.

The image is obtained after derotating about 1h worth of data in WinJuPos, with wavelet sharpening and noise reduction done to calibrate the final image.
