Can you salvage this image??

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Can you salvage this image??

Post by rcj »

Hi all,
Here is an exercise for everyone. I have an image here of the Antares nebula complex region in Scorpius. Apparently it shows severe vignetting and loss of colour due to overexposure. Can this image be saved? Try it, and let's hear your experiences in saving this poor image.

Sure :D ... there are quite a few methods, depending on the output you like .... maybe you can tell me what output you will like to see. Of course if you emphasis on one, you trade off with another. If you see everything, then it definately does not show the truth.

(However, I must say you have a very good CCD / Digital Camera to have captured all these detail information. If the detail information are gone, I can't do anything at all :D)

The one above balance lumosity and enviroment output.

The one below concentrate on the stars :

The one below provides the general effect of the stars with the enviroment :

Here is my attempt.

I used the simple ACDSee software to adjust contrast, whitepoint, blackpoint, and saturation.

It brings out the colours a lot, but can't solve the vignetting issue. May have to use some lasso feature for that to isolate the outer part and boost it.

PS: Didn't know there could be so much hidden colour in a whitewashed image! Remus, your imager must be very good to capture so much colour. Where did you take it, and with what?

Here is what I got using the gradient removal (with a mask) command in Iris and a simple level adjustment in photoshop.

Limited what I can do because of the small image.

Btw, really nice image Remus!

Chris

If you want to see more colour, you can push up the saturation a bit..
