Hi,

As requested, here is a map of the Mersing region, with some of my markings.

As I recall, the viewing field is about 1.5km south of Kampong Telok Sari (shown in the map), and just beside the road which leads up north to the kampong.

From Mersing town, you'd have to drive up north for about 15 km along the road that leads to Pahang/Kuantan, and then make a right turn into a east-bound road that leads towards the sea. I think the turn off is marked as leading to "Tanjong Resang" or "Kampong Tanjong Resang".

(Unfortunately, this road that leads to Tanjong Resang is not marked on the map which I have. I have added an arrow to mark its approximate position and drawn dotted lines to represent the road.)

After turning into that east bound road, which is very well paved, drive on for about 5-10mins. You will then come to a T-Junction. To the right is Tanjong Resang. To the left (north) is Kampong Telok Sari and the viewing field.

After turning left, travel on (north) for another 5-10 mins (at one point going on a bridge over a river mouth) and you will pass the viewing field. The field itself is about the size of 3 football fields, but is not marked.

I think the chalet we will be staying at is at Kampong Telok Sari.

Anyone please add to or correct the above description.

The whole region around Telok Sari is quite scenic, like a scene out of what I imagine Tahiti looks like. Lots of friendly sheep and goats, and not so friendly water-buffalos - keep well clear of them.)

I name the observation field "Padang Bintang", which is "Star Field" in Malay.

ooohh...no tents? so I suppose the SP astro club will not be there for the first time ? anyway, if no tent, will have to sleep on ground sheets like what wira always does when we go there...heh heh....
i think carrefour and even NTUC are selling those "2 man" or "3 man" tents for less than $50...
you need to derate the "3 man" as it looks more like "2 man" or "1 fat man" space to me unless you all plan to sleep sitting up!

Here are the coordinates of the observation site taken from Matthew Chang's excellent astro website:
http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~audioworks/nortunal.htm

2º 36' 13.2"N, 103º 46' 48.9"E

I think these co-ordinates might be of the older observation part of the field around the coconut trees. The last time I went to Telok Sari in October 2005, we observed at an area of the field about 200 metres south of the old area. That's because access to the old area has been cut-off by a newly dug trench.

Let's call the new area of the field "Padang Bintang Selasa".

Thanks for the map, Gavin! I've also found another one by Arief in 2004 in the forum. :)

I may be going up on Sat with mmi (Tucker?) on our own, or I'll check with my friend if he can drive us up. Or is anyone here going to drive up on Sat as well?

I haven't got the chance ( and courage ) to tell my husband yet though....

Remus, if you need tents, you can have mine (4-men)... And I think my friend has a 8-men tent. Not sure if he still has it now. Will check for you.
