Quartz diagonal, worth it?

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Quartz diagonal, worth it?

Post by ariefm71 »

I'm thinking of getting either a TMB, WO, or AT quartz diagonal, the diagonal is about S$100 more expensive than a normal dielectric one. Is the advantage of quartz (i.e. zero expansion from thermal change) really relevant in our climate?

It is better to use the extra money to buy TV everbright or AP maxbright diagonals. I used to disassemble WO and TV diagonals. I prefer the TV and AP diagonals because its mechanicsm leads to perfect alignment.

The design in WO/Orion/AT diagonals can cause misalignment at the connection between the mirror housing and the eyepiece barrel. If you want to know what I mean, take it apart once :)

does that apply to dielectric diagonals too...? are they worth it... and are all wo diagonals defficient in the same manner?

The Dielectric diagonal is worth the extra cost.. If you do nothing with the WO diagonal, its collimation is perfect. But it is not for me who wants to how stuffs work :) ha ha

I'm glad I followed VinSnr suggestion and skip the quartz diagonal!
I just bought another Liuming's famous dielectric diagonal ( http://www.singastro.org/viewtopic.php?t=2590 ) that gives me identical performance to the quartz diagonal. I bought the SCT version (last one in the stock).

With the $300 saving between the quartz and liuming's diagonal, I bought myself a new Apple iPod Hi-fi speaker system :D :D (some ppl are selling these for ard $300 on yahoo auction, they got it from some Singtel lucky draws or something). This speaker is really better than Bose SoundDock ( http://www.ipodobserver.com/story/25851 )

FYI,

Arief, you just saw the Saturn through the TEC-140 by using WO Quartz 2" diagonal at Bangkok, Thailand.
