Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

TMB Signature Series 80mm

Post by Meng Lee »

This TMB looks beautiful and the price is also reasonable!!

http://www.astronomics.com/main/product ... t_id/TMB80

On a closer look, it looks like the tube might have come from the Far East. It looks like the Skywatcher Equinox series, AstroTech, Baader scopes.

Maybe the tube is from the Far East but the lens is from TMB (Triplet lens!!) thats why the price can be that low.

I got some urge to sell my Megrez Fluorite Doublet 80mm to get this scope!!

What's your views?

Thanks.

It looks like there will be a lot of good scopes both new and old to watch out for ...especially now the USD is so low, and will even go lower :)

I don't see the difference between this and the WO ones. Actually the red WO anniversary scope look so much nicer. I doubt you can see any differences through the eyepiece anyway.

Of course there will be differences. The WO anniversary scope will have better contrast and light throughput as it is a doublet.

If TMB is a triplet, does it mean more contrast than doublet? Or because of its triplet (more glass surfaces), thus less contrast.

Hmm.. sounds like comparing eps with many lens elements and orthos.

the triplet should have better color correction (if the design is executed correctly), but the doublet will have better visual contrast than triplet

From TMB himself, he seems to hire people from China to make his Signature Series, in his own words:

He cannot even say who made the lenses for the Signature Series.

Hmm, perhaps for planets, the triplet will have better contrast. For deep sky objects, the doublet will give brighter images.

one thing about triplets, with its strong internal steep element curves, they are more sensitive to temperature variations and internal alignment. A little off alignment and you will have comatic results. It is hence important to realise that the optical lens cell that houses these triplets are well designed together with spacers and rings that are strategically placed and (designed) so maintain good alignment and manage changing temperature gradients.

Hmmm, the TMB 130 is mentioned to be made with a temperature compensated lens cell but the TMB 80 wasn't mentioned to be made of that. Better ask TMB himself.
