Another old telescope this time from 1867

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Another old telescope this time from 1867

Post by Barry »

Hi all,

well, me and old telescopes just keep finding each other. On neither occasion was I looking for one, but there it is...

I was handed this one on Friday, and have since pulled it into a million bits, measured and photo documented the whole thing, done some research online and written a new web page for my site.

Enjoy the read!

Thanks for sharing Barry.

Hi,Barry
Interesting article and good work. However, one question-How do you remove the stain and the sketch marks from the lens.I am a old timer in astronomy-pick it up since Primary 4 and now about 55--and on many occassions try to clean and preserve and reuse those old scope I had.
Lens have optical coating turning into a semi opaque unremovable coating;the optical glue that bind optical pair into achromatic lens becoming opaque or sand like dots forming inside the lens.Do you have a special method to overcome those problem,or just find a substitude.Thanks.

Thanks all,

Mate, I've never had that problem. I have only had one old reflector and one refractor come across my path. The refractor has a chip in the edge of the objective, but the glass is clean and clear.

The reflector was scratched and the old silver coating was worn and tarnished. We got that one re-aluminised.

I got the tripod on Monday morning and have now finished the restoration and put it all together.

Finished story here. http://www.asignobservatory.com/1867_w. ... actor.aspx
