Hi all,
Just sharing a montage of the phases of the Annular Solar eclipse on 15 Jan 2010, taken from the Laikipia Plateau in beautiful Kenya. The background of the montage was taken just before sunrise on eclipse day, and shows Mount Kenya in the distance.
The morning before was totally cloudy (and so was the day after the eclipse), but eclipse day had pristine clear skies. The location was spectacular, and Kenya truly feels like the cradle of life.
Those who are unfamiliar with Africa may think that all the countries here are "notorious" but Kenya is actually one of the safer countries, and very tourist friendly. The safaris at the Masai Mara are operated very professionally.
Best regards,
Joo Beng.

It happens that we have friends in Kenya, so at least had a lot of help in figuring out logistics of the eclipse in Kenya. Couldn't bring the whole family since school is on. The location we chose was a ranch home out in the bush, practically in the middle of nowhere. Elephants, lions and leopards roaming in the yard are common, and yes, can be dangerous. But must just listen carefully to instructions and everything was fine.
During the maximum eclipse itself, the scenery was quite surreal. Even though it was bright, it felt cool and dimmer as though it was dusk. But the panoramic view was really above all expectation. Just nature as far as the eye could see (about 50km).
Hmm...I didn't realise that there will be another eclipse in Kenya in 2013! Too far away to plan. Will be contemplating the July 2010 one in Easter Island first :-P

Hooray! Wanted to share the fact that Astronomy Magazine published my composite image of the annular eclipse in Kenya in the June 2010 issue. It's nice to see it in print!!
