Mars captured during opposition night (30/01/10)

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Mars captured during opposition night (30/01/10)

Post by rcj »

Hi guys!

This is my first time taking Mars (ever) with a digital camera, and glad the weather was fine to capture it during opposition night, maxing out at 14.1" in diameter. Though it is not "as big" as it was back in 2003 and seeing was moderate that very night, it was fun seeing Mars on the laptop screen while being captured and processing it, besides the usual Jupiter experience. A series of captures were done with the DMK 21 firewire camera and each channel (IR-G-B) was extracted with about 700-800 frames each and stacked in Registax. Post processing was done in Photoshop. Instrument used was the CN212 in Cass mode together with a 2.5x powermate. Also thanks to fellow Singastro member, Guangwei, for making this session possible! Enjoy!

thanks everyone...actually the seeing was not very good that night, but it did improve as the night progressed, though it never got to a point where it was easy to get it to focus...had to swing the scope to the lunar craters for focusing before swinging back to Mars... am fascinated with the "blue clouds"... hope to try shooting it again sometime soon....
